Because of the numerous falsehoods spread in the late days, the general audience has uncertainty about the status of Peruvian politics and why former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was arrested.
Here I provide a line of events to clarify why and how things occurred.
Furthermore, the reasons for the protests in Peru are the results of an incendiary discourse promoted by Pedro Castillo and his former Prime Minister Anibal Lopez and a considerable portion of Peru’s left-leaning parties as the result of Pedro Castillo’s arrest after his coup d’état.

October 11th, 2022
- National Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, presented a formal accusation against President Castillo for the crimes of Criminal Organization, Influence Peddling, and Collusion.
December 7th, 2022
- 11:00 am The National Prosecution Agency broadcasts how the former advisor from the Ministry of Housing of Peru, Salatiel Marrufo, declares that President Pedro Castillo requested a monthly payment of S/.50,000 to keep him in his charge.
Pedro Castillo also asked 2 million soles to pay corrupt judges to rule in favor of his nephews Gian Marco Castillo Gómez y Fray Vásquez Castillo.
December 7th, 2022
- Around noon, Just minutes after Salatiel Marrufo’s testimony, Pedro Castillo, today’s former president of Peru, announces a coup d’état, decides to close the Congress, and declares new elections to form a new Congress.

- Minutes later, today’s former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, notices how the armed forces of Peru reject his orders. Castillo then tries to flee Government Palace, taking the route toward the Mexican Embassy.
Pedro Castillo tries to escape but is captured
- The Congress of Peru approved Pedro Castillo’s Impeachment due to moral incapacity after the failed coup with 101 votes in favor.
- The Vice President, Dina Boluarte (who belongs to the same political party as Castillo, Peru Libre), becomes the first woman president of Peru.
December 13th, 2022
- National Prosecutor Agency, through the Supreme Public Prosecutor, Uriel Teran, requests that Pedro Castillo remains in jail for the next 18 months as a preventive measure while the investigations for the failed coup continue.
December 15th, 2022
- Supreme Court Judge Juan Carlos Checkley rules that former President Pedro Castillo must remain in jail for 18 months. Checkley confirms that Castillo is retained in prison for the causes of a severe felony, preventing escape from the country and a high probability of committing a crime.
The Plot thickens, and Pedro Castillo's jail time too
March 9th, 2023
- The National Prosecutor Agency asked to expand the preventive incarceration from 18 months to 36 months for three new crimes: criminal organization, aggravated collusion, and influence peddling committed in Petroperu (National stated-oil company), and four different Secretaries: Transportation, Housing, Construction, and Sanitation.
March 10th, 2023
- Jorge Hernández Fernández alias ‘Español’ was arrested following an investigation that involved him as a member of a parallel Intelligence Service created by former president Pedro Castillo to spy on the political opposition, national prosecutors, and press members; and also for conspiring to kill the now former General Director of Police Intelligence Colonel Harvey Colchado, Prosecutor Marita Barreto, and journalist Phillip Butters.
